Voters in Maine approved a new ballot measure empowering concerned family members to initiate a process intended to prevent potentially dangerous individuals from owning or operating firearms. Previously in Maine, police officers could initiate that process. The new measure now extends that same power to family members, according to AP News.
The measure comes after an Army reservist opened fire at a bar and bowling alley in Lewiston, Maine, in October 2023, killing 18 people. A review of that incident flagged several missed opportunities where individuals could have intervened to prevent the massacre, including at least one individual specifically warning about a mass shooting months before the attack.
