Zohran Mamdani, New York City’s Democratic nominee for mayor, has walked back his position on police funding following a fatal shooting on Monday, July 28, that claimed the life of NYPD Officer Didarul Islam and three others. The incident occurred when a gunman opened fire inside a building on Park Avenue in Manhattan.

In a statement after meeting with Officer Islam’s family, Mamdani clarified, “I am not defunding the police. I am not running to defund the police.” He emphasized that, if elected, he does not intend to reduce the NYPD’s size or budget.

Instead, Mamdani proposed creating a new Department of Community Safety. This department would focus on responding to specific emergencies, particularly those involving mental health crises, aiming to supplement and not replace traditional policing.
