Thousands of protesters and activists marched through Manhattan on Saturday with anti-Trump, pro-climate and anti-oligarchic signs and chants like “Make Billionaires Pay” and “Defend Mother Earth.” Other issues at the diverse protest included democracy, free speech, gender equality, immigration policy, fascism, Gaza and the rule of law.

The Associated Press reports that a common theme linked these diverse interests together: a concern “that a small, elite class of the wealthy and powerful consistently prioritized profits over people’s lives.”

The demonstrations were timed to begin as New York Climate Week and the United Nations General Assembly’s 80th annual summit both kick off in New York City.
