Change.org petition supporting Harjinder Singh, the man charged in the deaths of three people following a crash in Florida, has garnered over 2.5 million signatures. The petition is calling for leniency as Singh faces up to 45 years in prison.

“This was a tragic accident — not a deliberate act. While accountability matters, the severity of the charges against himdoes not align with the circumstances of the incident,” the petition reads, in part. Singh made an illegal U-turn on the Florida Turnpike on Tuesday, Aug. 12, when a minivan carrying three people slammed into the trailer.

The State Department has since paused issuing work visas to foreign drivers who seek to become truck drivers.
