A Minnesota state senator, Nicole Mitchell, plans to resign by Monday, August 4, after being convicted of felony burglary for breaking into her estranged stepmother’s house.

Mitchell was found guilty of first-degree burglary and possession of burglary tools by a jury after a three-hour deliberation. Senate Republican Leader Mark Johnson called for Mitchell’s immediate resignation rather than a two-week delay.

The incident leading to Mitchell’s conviction occurred on Tuesday, April 22, 2024, at her stepmother’s home in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota.
