Minnesota state Rep. Kaohly Vang Her admitted on Monday, June during a House floor speech that she and her family are in the U.S. illegally. Her admission occurred amid a special legislative session called by Gov. Tim Walz to debate MinnesotaCare eligibility for immigrants residing in the country illegally.
During the speech, she explained her family entered the U.S. at the end of the Vietnam War by misrepresenting familial relations on paperwork to gain entry. She acknowledged that she resides in the U.S. without legal authorization, noted that her family was more strategic in how they entered the country illegally and called for equal opportunities for others regardless of their immigration status.
Following the speech, a bill repealing MinnesotaCare coverage for immigrants residing in the country illegally passed the Republican-controlled House and moved to the Senate.
