In 2025, targeting transgender people in bathrooms has become a priority for Republicans, with Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., leading a campaign against transgender Rep. Sarah McBride, D-DE. Montana Republicans have introduced House Bill 121, which would ban transgender adults from using restrooms matching their gender identity in public buildings.

The bill, supported by 35 Republican legislators, is among the most extreme bathroom bans in the country, affecting various public facilities.

This legislation follows a trend of anti-trans bills nationwide, with over 140 anti-LGBTQ+ bills introduced in the early days of the 2025 legislative session.
