A Montana judge has blocked a rule that prevented transgender people from changing their sex on documents. The ruling allows transgender individuals to update their legal documents to reflect their gender identity.
This decision is significant for transgender rights in Montana, with advocates for transgender rights viewing this ruling as a victory. The rule was blocked as it moves through the courts by District Judge Mike Menahan on Monday, Dec. 16. A previously passed law also blocked gender-affirming care for transgender children, that law was also blocked and has been in limbo since the block.
