A new Washington Post/ABC News poll found that a majority of Americans oppose President Donald Trump’s decision to demolish the East Wing of the White House to make room for a new ballroom. Trump has said the proposed 90,000-square-foot ballroom, which will accommodate nearly 1,000 guests, is being financed with $300 million in private donations.

Only 28% of Americans approve of the project, with 15% strongly supporting tearing down the East Wing. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt described the project as a “magnificent addition” and noted that past presidents have also undertaken major renovations.

Meanwhile, Democratic lawmakers have criticized the plan, citing concerns about transparency and oversight in the project’s approval process.
