A recent New York Times poll finds that 65% of Americans oppose a government shutdown, while just 27% support it. Among registered Democrats, 47% say a shutdown is justified if demands aren’t met.
Meanwhile, 59% of independents oppose such a step. If Congress fails to pass necessary funding legislation, a government shutdown could impact thousands of federal workers and disrupt many services.
Senate Democrats have declared they will not back a stopgap funding measure that excludes health care provisions. Their stance includes demands for the extension of Affordable Care Act tax credits and protection of Medicaid programs.
“The Democrats who you saw there are trying to find a good faith way to move forward, get the ACA tax credits that we want, and also some of the appropriations that they are asking for,” Sen. Ruben Gallego said.
