A new poll shows that 27% of Canadians view the United States as an “enemy” country, while 30% consider it an ally, according to the Leger survey. Nearly the same amount said the U.S. was a “neutral” country.

The survey was conducted among 1,500 Canadians between Feb. 14 and Feb. 17, according to Leger.
Sébastien Dallaire of Leger noted surprise at the division among Canadians regarding the U.S., stating that the word “enemy” is strong.

The poll was conducted after President Donald Trump threatened to impose economic tariffs on Canada and has made repeated comments that Canada should become the “51st state.”
