Prosecutors state that Ian McKeever continued to drive a horse, Ryder, on a hot day in August 2022, despite signs of struggle before Ryder fell on the way back to his barn. Caroline Londahl-Smidt, an onlooker, testified that the horse exhibited “major distress” as McKeever attempted to speed him up.

Animal advocates argue that it is inhumane for horses to navigate Manhattan traffic during such conditions.

If convicted, McKeever could face up to one year in jail but may also receive fines or community service as alternatives.
