New York City Fire Commissioner Robert Tucker announced that he will step down from his position effective Friday, December 19. The announcement comes shortly after the election of Zohran Mamdani as the city’s next mayor.
While Tucker did not provide a detailed explanation for his decision, he noted that his leadership may not align with the incoming administration’s direction. Mamdani, who won the mayoral race with 50% of the vote against former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, is scheduled to take office on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2026, becoming the city’s first Muslim mayor.
Tucker, who has served as fire commissioner since August 2024, said he plans to return to his private security business after leaving the FDNY.
