California Gov. Gavin Newsom has proposed a partnership with the White House on a $7.5 billion federal film tax credit scheme to help Hollywood. The proposal comes amid President Donald Trump’s call for a 100% tariff on non-U.S. Movies.
The proposed federal tax credit aims to support American film and TV production, reflecting California’s own $750 million program to enhance industry competitiveness.
Trump criticized Newsom, asserting that “other nations have been stealing the movies” and suggested Newsom’s leadership contributed to the decline of U.S. filmmaking.
In a statement, the California governor emphasized the state’s commitment to becoming a film production leader and expressed eagerness to partner with the Trump administration.
