Newsom launches crime-fighting teams across California as Trump pushes National Guard plan

California Gov. Gavin Newsom has unveiled new crime-fighting units that are set to be stationed in six regions across the state, including in major metropolitan areas such as Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area. The move aims to strengthen coordination with local authorities in addressing challenges like organized retail theft and illegal drug activity.

Similar efforts are already underway in cities like Oakland. The announcement comes amid broader national conversations around public safety, and stands to contrast President Donald Trump’s calls for deploying the National Guard in cities governed by Democrats.

While public concern about crime remains, recent data shows a decline in violent incidents in several California cities, including a 21% drop in homicides in Oakland compared to the same time last year.
