The California Supreme Court has ruled that Gov. Gavin Newsom can move forward with his redistricting plan. Republican legislators filed a petition to stop the move, which is in response to GOP lawmakers in Texas and their push to redraw district maps.

“Petitioners have failed to meet their burden of establishing a basis for relief at this time under California Constitution article IV, section 8,” a portion of the ruling read. Newsom is looking to hold a special election in November that would waive the state’s independent districting process.

If voters approve the move, the number of California Republican House seats could be cut in half.
