An off-duty U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer was shot in the face during an attempted robbery by Miguel Francisco Mora Nunez in Fort Washington Park, Manhattan, around 11:50 p.m. on Saturday night, July 19. Nunez, a Dominican national, had previously been apprehended by Border Patrol in April 2023 but was released due to lack of detention space.

Following the incident, Nunez was arrested after seeking medical attention for his gunshot wounds and has a history of violent crimes with an outstanding warrant in Massachusetts. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed that the officer is in stable condition after surgery and emphasized the dangers posed by individuals like Nunez.
