Norway’s government is now planning to make abortion laws less strict. The new regulations would allow the procedure to happen up until the 18th week of a pregnancy. This is the first time a relaxed change has been made in almost 50 years.

The current abortion laws allow the procedure only up to 12 weeks. However, many requests after that time range have been granted, according to the Norwegian Health Minister, Jan Christian Vestre.

The law has about 80 lawmakers supporting it at this time, but it requires at least 85 votes from the 169-member Stortinget.
