As Calif. Gov. Gavin Newsom pushes a new redistricting proposal in response to actions by Republican-led states like Texas, he has received support from former President Barack Obama. Speaking at a recent fundraising event, Obama called the plan a “responsible approach,” stating that it would only move forward if similar efforts advance in states like Texas.

“We’re only going to do it if and when Texas and/or other Republican states begin to pull these maneuvers,” Obama said. Newsom’s proposal could increase the number of Democratic House seats in California from 43 to 48.

The plan follows reports that Texas is seeking to add five Republican-leaning districts.
