Rep. Max Miller (R-Ohio) is calling for the National Guard to be deployed to Cleveland. Miller urged Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine to authorize troops’ presence in the city as “families no longer feel safe walking down the street.”
Miller pointed to President Donald Trump’s federal takeover of cities his administration deems to have issues with rising violence. “The District of Columbia faced a similar crisis, with crime rates spiraling out of control,” he said. “By bringing in the National Guard, President Trump helped stabilize the situation.”
Meanwhile, Gov. DeWine last week said he was open to partnerships that could help reduce crime but would not deploy troops to Ohio cities. “I do not anticipate, for example, as governor of the state of Ohio, deploying the National Guard into any of our cities to deal with violent crime. It doesn’t mean there might be something come up where we need the Guar,” he said.
