Oil, gas companies told to cut emissions by one-third under planned cap

Oil and gas producers in Canada must cut greenhouse gas emissions by one-third within eight years according to new regulations from Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault. Emissions from upstream oil and gas operations must decrease to 35% less than 2019 levels by 2030, as outlined by Guilbeault.
Newly released government modelling predicts oil and gas production will increase by 16% by 2032, despite the regulations in place. This new regulation fulfills a 2021 campaign promise by the Liberal Party of Canada.
