Oklahoma superintendent wants Turning Point USA in every high school

Oklahoma State Superintendent of Education Ryan Walters said Tuesday that his office will seek to establish a Turning Point USA (TPUSA) chapter at every high school in Oklahoma following Charlie Kirk’s death. Kirk was the founder of TPUSA and used his platform to help mobilize right-wing youth voter turnout for President Donald Trump ahead of the U.S. 2024 elections.

The announcement raises a variety of legal, ethical and constitutional concerns, including concerns of potentially state-mandated political indoctrination or political bias at public schools.

Walters has reportedly been organizing new TPUSA chapters at schools throughout Oklahoma while excluding other student political groups not aligned with the right-wing movement.

The superintendent has also opened investigations into at least 12 Oklahoma school districts and over 470 Oklahoma teachers for not complying with a state-mandated moment of silence in the wake of Kirk’s death.

One Democratic school board member in Tulsa commented that while students should have the right to form and join clubs like TPUSA, districts should not be “pushing political organizations within our schools.”
