The Ontario Human Rights Tribunal fined the township of Emo $10,000 and its mayor, Harold McQuaker, $5,000 for voting against proclaiming Pride Month in 2020. The tribunal ruled that the mayor’s comments were discriminatory and demeaning to the LGBTQ2 community. The mayor and chief administrative officer were also ordered to undergo human rights training to address their discriminatory actions.
