Ontario Premier Doug Ford commissioned an advertisement aimed at the U.S., featuring excerpts from a 1987 radio address by Ronald Reagan warning that high tariffs spark trade wars. The ad aired during major American broadcasts and reportedly achieved over 11 billion impressions worldwide.

In response, President Donald Trump labeled the spot as “fraudulent” and accused the campaign of misrepresenting Reagan’s speech. Trump then announced a 10 % increase in tariffs on Canadian goods.

Meanwhile, the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute stated the Ontario government did not seek permission and that the ad took Reagan’s remarks out of context. Ford defended the effort as a wake-up call, saying the investment was “worth it” because it got Americans’ attention.
