Over 1 in 5 new federal DC cases dropped since Trump’s DC takeover

Since President Trump’s federalized takeover of Washington, D.C. police and his deployment of the National Guard last month, over 50 people have been accused of federal offenses, out of roughly 2,000 arrests overall. Prosecutors have now dropped at least 11 of those 50 federal cases.

That’s an unusually high rate of dropped cases, and judges have criticized the Trump administration’s behavior for allegedly wasting public resources on those cases, according to The Associated Press.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Matthew Sharbaugh warned that federal prosecutors were prematurely filing charges, prior to thorough investigation, and that this behavior was resulting in a disproportionately high number of dropped cases and a waste of public funds.
