Over 80 NGOs call on EU to stop trading with illegal Israeli settlements

Over 80 civil society organizations worldwide have joined together to issue a call for their respective governments to cease all trade with Israeli settlements deemed illegal under international law. Around 160 such settlements, housing approximately 700,000 Israelis, have been built since 1967, according to one of the groups.

The campaign comes as global pressure builds on both Israel and Hamas to reach an agreeable ceasefire and work towards a permanent peace framework.

France, Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom all say they might formally recognize a Palestinian state as part of that effort, while Arab powers and the United Nations General Assembly officially threw their support behind a “Hamas-free” government for Palestine on Sept. 12.
