Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., has returned to Washington, D.C. after undergoing hip replacement surgery in Germany. Her return is significant, as a new Congress will begin on Friday, Jan. 3, which includes a speaker’s race involving current Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La. Every Democrat has pledged to be in attendance for the speaker vote, as Republicans hold a slight margin, and a few have already signaled their intent not to support Johnson.
Pelosi stated, “I’m on my way to Washington to proudly represent the people of San Francisco in Congress.” In the November election, a majority of voters in all nine Bay Area counties supported Proposition 36, which calls for stricter penalties on theft and fentanyl-related crimes.
