In January 2020, investor and entrepreneur Peter Thiel discussed the challenges facing younger generations regarding housing affordability and student debt. He argued that many Millennials are struggling to enter the housing market due to rising costs and restrictive zoning laws that he said favor older property owners.

Thiel suggested that the combination of heavy student loan burdens and limited access to affordable housing contributes to growing economic frustration among young people. He noted that if younger generations feel excluded from homeownership and financial stability, they may lose confidence in existing economic systems.

“When 70% of Millennials say they are pro-socialist, we need to do better than simply dismiss them by saying that they are stupid or entitled or brainwashed; we should try to understand why,” Thiel said in an email.
