Policies, not price gouging, to blame for California’s soaring gas prices: Study

California gas prices are nearly $2 per gallon higher than the national average due to state policies, according to a study from the University of Southern California. The study by Michael A. Mische found that taxes and fees account for approximately $1.638 per gallon of the cost.

Mische concluded that California largely self-inflicted its high gasoline prices, resulting from directed policies and a mix of regulations, taxes and fees.

Gas prices in Nevada and Arizona have increased due to California’s refinery closures, prompted by new state regulations, according to bipartisan concerns from both states’ governors.
