At Columbia University’s May 2025 graduation in New York City, some graduates protested by burning diplomas and chanting anti-genocide and pro-Palestinian slogans. The protest occurred amid a growing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. A Columbia University student organization led efforts to disrupt the commencement ceremony.
Between 65 to 100 protesters disrupted President Claire Shipman’s address, shouted ‘free Palestine,’ wore keffiyehs, and were met by NYPD officers who arrested two individuals near 116th Street and Broadway.
Shipman acknowledged the detention of Columbia graduate Mahmoud Khalil, held in immigration custody since March, and stated that international students have equal free speech rights and should be free from government targeting.
Despite disruptions and arrests, Columbia maintained that the commencement proceeded safely, with thousands attending. Activists continue urging the university to divest from companies linked to the Israeli war effort.
A spokesperson from Columbia University stated the NYPD managed the small group of protesters while the commencement festivities successfully carried on at the campus.
