Sen. Adam Schiff is preparing a legal defense in response to a Department of Justice investigation into alleged mortgage fraud, following a criminal referral from the Federal Housing Finance Agency. Schiff has denied any wrongdoing and described the allegations as politically motivated.
He has previously stated that he believes he is being targeted by President Donald Trump, pointing to his role in leading Trump’s first impeachment. The president, in turn, has accused Schiff of misrepresenting his primary residence to secure more favorable mortgage terms.
The DOJ has not publicly commented on the investigation, and no charges have been filed.
