On Oct. 7, the United States Supreme Court will hear arguments on whether or not it is legal for states to ban LGBTQ+ “conversion” therapy. Nearly half of U.S. states have banned the controversial practice.

The case, Chiles v. Salazar, comes from a challenge to Colorado’s ban on conversion therapy for transgender children, filed on the grounds of the First Amendment rights of free speech and freedom of religion.

Currently, Colorado law prohibits counselors from providing therapy to minors if that therapy aims to change someone’s sexual orientation or gender identity, according to The Hill.

Kaley Chiles is challenging that ban, with the support of President Donald Trump and his allies.

If the Court strikes down the ban in a sweeping ruling, it might also impact gender transition therapy rules nationwide.
