A congressional staffer was arrested for allegedly carrying a pistol without a license on Capitol grounds, according to U.S. Capitol Police. Kevin A. Batts, a 59-year-old staff member for Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., was identified as the person arrested.
Batts is a former Newark police detective who is employed as a driver by Booker, the senator’s spokesperson, Jeff Giertz said.
The arrest came as Booker delivered a marathon speech on the Senate floor, challenging President Donald Trump’s agenda and a lack of inaction from his own party.
All weapons are prohibited on Capitol grounds, regardless of permits, as stated by police.
