Sen. Ernst proposes IRS oversight bill after report reveals employee tax debts

The Tax DODGER Act, introduced by Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, would allow federal agencies to fire employees with serious tax debts, addressing reported tax shortfalls among IRS staff and other federal workers. Nearly 150,000 federal workers owed $1.5 billion in back taxes as of fiscal year 2021, with 2,000 IRS employees alone owing $12 million in overdue taxes.

The proposed legislation aims to restore trust in the IRS and federal government by demanding accountability from tax collectors who fail to meet their own obligations.
