On Tuesday, The Washington Post reported the Social Security Administration is “in turmoil.” The Post reported there are about 6 million pending cases and 12 million transactions delaying services for roughly 74 million Americans.

After February’s layoff announcement, around 7,000 employees were cut. With 93 million calls coming in, reassigned SSA staff received minimal training — sometimes just four hours worth — while average hold times of about 2½ hours strained phone staff.

As a result, many disability claimants now face three to six-month waits for payments. Additionally, direct-deposit rules require in-person or online updates that elderly and bedridden customers often cannot meet. The Havre, Montana, field office remains closed.
