A former U.S. Department of State employee was sentenced to four years in prison on Thursday for selling classified national defense or intelligence information to individuals he believed to be working for or on behalf of China’s government. The suspect, Michael Schena of Alexandria, Virginia, previously worked at State Department headquarters, where he held a top secret security clearance.

Schena was reportedly told that the individuals he was selling information to worked for international consulting groups, but then continued collecting and selling information after was made aware that the buyers were seeking to purchase classified information on behalf of China. The U.S. Department of Justice says that Schena continued this work even after believing the buyers were Chinese government agents.
