The closure of the market draws criticism towards city-funded grocery stores as similar proposals arise from New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani.

In statements to Fox News Digital, Mamdani said that he appreciated the work of New York City’s grocery store workers and managers, and expressed an interest in partnering with private family-run grocery stores by providing a “public option” to help lower the cost of basic grocery items. Mamdani explained he wants the city government to help subsidize some of their costs in order to lower consumer prices.

This headline was amended Aug. 16 to specify that the grocery store was in Kansas City, Missouri, not the state of Kansas.
