The Taliban passed a law allowing men to beat their wives if they do not cause “broken bones or open wounds,” according to a 60-page penal code obtained by The Telegraph.
This code, The Telegraph reported, was signed by Taliban supreme leader Hibatullah Akhundzada and passed out in courts throughout Afghanistan. It classifies spousal beatings as “ta’zir,” which is considered a discretionary punishment and not a criminal act.
If serious injury can be proven, The Telegraph wrote, the maximum sentence is still only 15 days — and the law is written in such a way to make sure that bar is never met.
