Texas has barred transgender people from changing the sex on their driver’s licenses to match their gender identity, even with legal documentation, as stated in an internal agency email. The Department of Public Safety announced it would no longer accept court orders for this change, following concerns from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton about the “validity” of such orders.
In 2023, legislation to prevent changes to birth certificates unless correcting clerical errors advanced but ultimately did not pass through courts.
