Leo’s predecessor, Pope Francis, had also strongly condemned Trump’s policies on immigration, saying that the Trump administration sought to strip immigrants of their inalienable human rights. Both popes have indicated that those policies are in conflict with the teachings of the Catholic Church, including specific provisions to welcome foreigners.

The news comes as Pope Leo XIV’s own hometown of Chicago becomes the latest epicenter in a national debate about heavy-handed immigration enforcement operations and the deployment of National Guard forces to combat immigration.
