Bishop Mark Seitz of El Paso, Texas met with Pope Leo XIV on Oct. 8. The bishop brought letters and videos from immigrant families living in what they described as fear and terror in the United States under President Donald Trump’s administration.
In response, the pope reportedly promised to stand with American bishops in defending the dignity and rights of immigrants and their families.

Leo’s predecessor, Pope Francis, had also strongly condemned Trump’s policies on immigration, saying that the Trump administration sought to strip immigrants of their inalienable human rights. Both popes have indicated that those policies are in conflict with the teachings of the Catholic Church, including specific provisions to welcome foreigners.
The news comes as Pope Leo XIV’s own hometown of Chicago becomes the latest epicenter in a national debate about heavy-handed immigration enforcement operations and the deployment of National Guard forces to combat immigration.
