TMZ issued an apology after coming under fire for laughter heard during the network’s coverage of the shooting death of Charlie Kirk. A live stream of TMZ’s newsroom showed employees rushing to work up the breaking story, and in the background, laughter and cheers could be heard.

Host Harvey Levin said the laughter was unrelated to the Kirk news. “There were some people in the back room away from our news desk here who were watching a car chase and they were laughing, they were clapping, and you could hear it out here, and we want to make a couple of things clear,” he said.

Levin insisted that if the employees were, in fact, laughing during that moment, they would no longer work at the network.
