Interim District of Columbia U.S. Attorney Ed Martin has formed “Special Unit: Election Accountability” to investigate election offenses. Martin has stated the unit has opened one investigation already.
Martin promoted false allegations about the 2020 election being rigged and has a history related to the “Stop the Steal” movement.
California Democratic Sen. Alex Padilla expressed concern that the unit may target political opponents rather than ensure fair voting.
Sean Morales-Doyle from the Brennan Center for Justice stated that the false belief in rampant election fraud undermines public faith in voting.
