Felony assaults in New York City’s subway system have increased by 19% in 2025, with 255 incidents reported so far, according to NYPD statistics. Of these assaults, 93 incidents, or 36%, targeted NYPD officers and MTA workers.

Overall, transit crime has decreased by 6% this year, with declines in murder, shootings, and other major crimes, as reported by the data.

Experts and officials suggest that mental health challenges, judicial system weaknesses, and crowding contribute to the increased assaults, while enforcement efforts may provoke aggressive responses.
