A 39-year-old woman named Sierra Nichole Smith was hit and killed by a semi-trailer truck carrying an Army M1 Abrams tank on June 16 in northeast Washington, D.C. On Monday night, Smith entered the street unexpectedly, lost her balance and collapsed in the path of a truck that was part of a convoy transporting equipment from the Army 250th birthday parade.
Smith was pinned under the truck as it continued eastbound on New York Avenue before being dislodged and struck by a following 2007 Chevrolet Suburban, with both drivers remaining at the scene. Officials from the Major Crash Investigations Unit are conducting the inquiry into the incident, and authorities have confirmed that no charges have been issued while indicating that Smith seemed impaired during the accident.
This fatal event highlights safety concerns during military parade equipment removal and ongoing investigations aim to clarify fault and prevent future tragedies.
