Trump administration officials are considering another batch of tariffs on semiconductors, Politico reported Thursday.
People familiar with discussions said one tariff approach the administration is looking at would “dramatically expand the number of tech products subject to the duties,” and would include chips as well as objects made with them such as laptops or servers in data centers, according to Politico.
Four people familiar with these discussions told Politico that Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick is partial toward an approach tying the relief foreign companies get from tariffs to investment in U.S. chip manufacturing.
According to Politico, the administration is thinking about a “phase-in period” for the new tariffs, and the framework could change in the future.
