Trump administration asks Supreme Court to leave mass layoffs at Education Department in place

The Trump administration requested that the Supreme Court temporarily halt a judge’s ruling requiring the reinstatement of nearly 1,400 Department of Education staff members who had been let go during large-scale layoffs. The court order came after U.S. District Judge Myong Joun blocked the layoffs, which the administration claims exceed judicial authority and stall dismantling plans.

The layoffs were part of President Donald Trump’s broader strategy to streamline the Education Department by eliminating discretionary functions, challenged in lawsuits by school districts and Democratic attorneys general.

A judge noted that the layoffs could likely cripple the department and hinder its responsibilities mandated by Congress.
