A federal judge has ruled that the White House must provide American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation during all press briefings led by President Donald Trump or Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt. The decision comes after a lawsuit filed by the National Association of the Deaf and Derrick Ford, who argued that the absence of ASL interpreters excluded deaf Americans from essential government information.
U.S. District Judge Amir Ali determined that the lack of ASL access violated accessibility laws and prevented equal participation in national updates on topics such as public health and the economy. Meanwhile, the Trump administration argued that closed captioning met accessibility requirements.
The judge noted that many deaf individuals rely primarily on ASL rather than written English and that providing interpretation is both practical and necessary to ensure full access to public communications.
