President Donald Trump on Wednesday called for the death penalty against Decarlos Brown Jr. Brown was caught on CCTV footage killing Iryna Zarutska, a 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee who had fled to the United States, on a train in Charlotte, North Carolina on Aug. 22.
“There can be no other option!!!” Trump wrote on Truth Social, calling Brown an “ANIMAL” and demanding “THE DEATH PENALTY.”

Attorney General Pam Bondi cited Brown as an example of someone who benefited from what she called “failed soft-on-crime policies.”
Prior to the homicide, Brown had a pre-existing criminal record that included assault, larceny and armed robbery.
The Washington Post observed that while it’s highly unusual for presidents to pressure prosecutors into seeking specific sentences or punishments in ongoing criminal cases, it’s not unusual for presidents to speak out against high-profile homicide cases in general.
