President Donald Trump issued an executive order aimed at making it easier to fire probationary federal workers on Thursday, April 24. The order requires agencies to certify that a probationary employee’s continued employment is in the public interest before granting tenure.

Donald F. Kettl stated that the executive order gives more power to agency managers and reflects lessons learned from previous court challenges.

The Office of Personnel Management is responsible for implementing the new regulations, which take effect immediately, with further review requirements starting after 90 days.
