President Donald Trump has added a sign reading “The Oval Office” outside the Oval Office, constructed from three sheets of paper taped together and printed with gold lettering. The display has drawn a range of reactions from political figures.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom commented on social media, suggesting the sign highlighted what he called Trump’s unfamiliarity with the workings of the White House. Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta, D-Pa, also criticized the move, calling it a distraction from issues such as the ongoing government shutdown and the millions of Americans affected by the suspension of SNAP benefits.
A White House spokesperson defended the addition, saying the president is focused on “making the White House beautiful” despite the criticism it has received. The comments come after the construction of the Trump-funded ballroom began, where the East Wing once stood.
